Filename or path too long

I got the following error attempting to generate instrumentation code:

Error 1 'AddInstrumentationInstallerClasses' failed: The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters. 0 0

- follow steps in "Walkthrough of the Team System Management Model Designer Power Tool"
- create solution root in directory that is 53 characters long with solution name 22 characters long
- Use names from the walkthrough

Yes, you've run into our "long path" issue. We are doing a couple of things to shorten the names up, but at this point the easiest workaround is simply to build to a shorter path name.

if you initially created the project in the default "Projects" directory C:\Users\Demo\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Projects then
  • close the solution
  • move the folder to a root (e.g c:\DEV\08\...)
  • open the solution; correct the folder path in the tsmmd model Managed Entities -> CustomerApplication -> Discovery Target with the new folder path of your project (e.g. E:\DEV\2008\DFO\CorporateSolution\CustomerApplication)
  • run again the step "Generate Instrumentation Helper"
